First Direct recently issued a report that defines 12 social media personalities based on extensive research of people’s behavior online. Most people will exhibit behaviors from several of the defined personalities: Ultras, Dippers, Deniers, Virgins, Lurkers, Peacocks, Ranters, Changlings, Ghosts, Quizzers, Informers and Approval Seekers. In person, we watch for body language and other clues – usually unconsciously - that help us appropriately interact. Online, we don’t have that luxury. Understanding how people behave on social media is a key step to interacting more effectively online.
